Duties

Responsibilities
  • Photograph or video crime scenes such as traffic fatality, homicide, theft, assault or any other kind of case to provide a permanent record of the scene and evidence collected
  • Process latent prints collected at crime scenes using powders and/ or chemicals and forward to a Latent Print Examiner for identification
  • Crime Scene Investigators must be knowledgeable in the proper processing and sequences
  • Collection and processing of evidence at a crime scene. Evidence can be anything from blood stains, seminal stains, hairs, fibers, glass, paint, firearms, tool marks, to items of clothing, furniture, bedding, etc
  • Use safe practices, be aware of biohazards, proper use of personal protection equipment and proper packaging and storage of evidence
  • Verification through prints of subjects with multiple arrests
  • Fingerprint Identification of deceased subjects by collecting morgue prints and comparing the prints to the individuals arrest record to determine verification of identity
  • Create crime scene sketches at the scene of all homicides and other major cases
  • Create a rough draft at the scene and enter measurements into a Computer Aided Drafting program to create a professional documentation of a crime scene
  • Write technical reports detailing actions taken at crime scenes and continued work in the Forensic Lab
  • Testify in court in all phases of crime scenes
  • Evidence that is collected at a scene by officers is submitted to the Forensic Lab for processing. Outside agencies will also submit evidence to the Forensic Lab for processing
  • Photographing victim, autopsy viewing, postmortem printing, trace evidence collection (nail scrapings, hair, tissue, blood) and physical evidence collection, (clothing, bullets, shoes)
  • Monitor vehicle maintenance, (routine maintenance) as well as repairs, restocking of supplies, and inventory of equipment and tools
  • Transport equipment, supplies, packages, and evidence
  • Assist the public with fingerprinting services for a fee
  • Prints of suspects in major cases (a complete record of all friction ridge detail including the fingers, fingertips, finger joints and edges as well as the entire palm)
  • Applicant fingerprinting for background investigations
  • Drive to/ from crime scenes throughout the city and occasionally nearby cities or other agencies
  • Occasionally driving to other Forensic Labs in the State of Texas
  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
  • Non exempt – Full-Time
  • 40-hour work week with rotating shifts. Selected candidate will be required to work weekends and holidays, as this is a 24/7 position. Call outs when necessary.
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of six months to one (1) year of experience
Licenses and Certifications
  • Required: A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
  • Required within 180 days of hire: TCIC/ NCIC less than full access certification
  • Required within one (1) year of hire: First Aide/ CPR certification
Preferred
  • IAI Crime Scene certification

  • Physical Exam: Yes
Basis of Rating
  • A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.

  • Any position that lists a minimum qualification for education level and/or license/certification will require the applicant to provide proof of documentation if selected for hire into the position with the City of Corpus Christi.
