LIFEGUARD I (SEASONAL) – NORTHERN BUTTES DISTRICT / LAKE OROVILLE SECTOR / LAKE OROVILLE STATE RECREATION AREA

The Lifeguard I reporting location is Lake Oroville State Recreation Area at 400 Glenn Dr, Oroville CA 95966. The LG I works under the supervision of the Sector Supervising Ranger and under the direction of State Park Peace Officers or Lifeguard II, if applicable.
The normal work hours are 10-hour shifts occurring between the hours of 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, up to five days per week including weekends, holidays and during special events; assigned days off may vary from month to month. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible. This position is seasonal with an approximate start date of May 1, 2025, and extending through late 2025.The Lifeguard I (Seasonal) position is the recruiting and training level for the seasonal lifeguard series. Under supervision, incumbents detect and rescue persons or vessels in distress; take command in emergencies; perform first-aid and resuscitation procedures; notify headquarters of accidents and rescues; prepare reports; remove hazards; assist the public and advise visitors of rules and regulations; operate, inspect and perform maintenance on emergency rescue equipment and vehicles; operate PBX switchboard and radiotelephone; and other related duties. This position will explain park policies and regulations to the visiting public; answers routine questions from the public; handle minor visitor complaints; coordinate occasional housekeeping activities; and checks park facilities (such as: swim beach, tower, rescue equipment, public safety first aid gear, and vehicles) to report problems.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Outdoor work is common. The incumbent’s work will involve moderate exposure to a full range of environmental conditions, varying terrain, unusual elements and inclement weather. This includes extreme temperatures; cold, windy, wet and muddy conditions; hot, dry, muggy or unpleasant conditions; exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors; ; allergens such as pollen and insect stings and bites; pool chemical fluctuations, which may cause eye and skin irritation; and loud or excessive noises; and exposure to infections, which may cause chronic disease or death, while administering first aid.
Typical work activities require the ability to use vision and / or hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies; to perform waterway rescues; to sit, stand or walk on a continuous basis while observing patrons using the recreational facilities. Considerable physical activity is common and a primary part of the job. The position requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 60 pounds. The incumbent will use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; swim and lift moderate weight; visually differentiate between colors when using the water quality testing kit; and occasionally lift and / or move heavy weight. May entail muscular strain, including walking, standing, climbing, stooping, sitting, kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting, balancing, lifting, carrying and reaching on uneven and slippery surfaces. The incumbent must have the ability to climb stairs / inclines, walk or traverse even and uneven terrain for extended or prolonged periods of time, and walk on variable surfaces. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions, listening effectively, following instructions and the ability to perceive hazards to the public, structures and exhibits to ensure safety while complying with Department policy, demonstrating adaptability and effectively communicating.This is a uniformed position, and the successful candidates will be required to purchase and wear a State Parks uniform.
A Lifeguard I (Seasonal) must have the ability to follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; and communicate effectively. Candidates hired will be subject to the completion of the DPR Seasonal Lifeguard Training Program; Current DPR CPR / AED certification (or equivalent); completion of the annual 1,000 yard ocean swim test -maximum time limit of 20 minutes.
Successful completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation seasonal lifeguard training program within one year of appointment.
